Lay Your Sundays to Rest

Jesus said, "The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath " Mark 2:27

Each Sunday is the same for me.  Me and the kids wake up early, get dressed, eat breakfast if we're lucky, then head over to church for service.  We usually don't get out until 11:30 or 12:00.  After service, we usually stop and pick up lunch from a drive-thru.  Now, it doesn't sound too stressful and leaves me plenty of time to do something before service that evening, right?  Unfortunately, for some reason, Sundays always seem to be "nap" day around here.  It doesn't matter the temperature or weather, I'm always tired!!!

Though there was no need for him to, the Lord rested on the seventh day.  He knew that our physical bodies and minds needed to recharge and "destress," so he gave us an example to follow.  Our bodies are the temple of His Spirit, according to the writer of I Corinthian 6:19.  If we are His temples, why would we not want to take care of it?  Rest is essential. According to, rest allows the following to happen:

  • Aids recovery
  • Keeps you healthy
  • Helps you sleep
  • Lowers stress
  • More energy throughout the day
  • Boosts brain function

The Lord knew the importance of rest and wants us to take advantage of it.  It doesn't necessarily mean we need to sleep, just "do nothing" and relax! Our plans for this day can wait. Be like Scarlett O'Hara and realize that, "There's always tomorrow."
